Fail Safe Spring Applied Brakes (SAB) from B.Brake.

A SAB type brake is one which employs a spring to apply pressure to a friction disc coupled to a rotating shaft.  In applications with an electric motor, the SAB Brake is powered by AC (alternating current) or DC (direct current, also referred to as continuous current) to in a stator or coil to create an electro magnet strong enough to pull a pressure plate away from the brake disc and into springs.  When power is removed, these same springs apply force to the pressure plate which puts pressure to the brake disc coupled to the motors rotor shaft, stopping rotation and holding the rotor shaft from turning.
